George, Decoy paint?

Post  Davey Welsh on Sat Feb 04, 2012 8:32 pm

Hey George, what type of paint do you use for your decoys? I've been using artist tube acrylics but this isn't very good for painting in bulk. Someone suggested FME paints from Lou at Lock Stock and Barrell. Curious what you are using.

pretty good deals, except you cannot get gallons. I have been buying direct from Golkden for well over twenty years. Stuff is super for durability and FLAT when dry!!!

You buy the FLUID acrylics right? The ones in the bottles, not the tubes? I have some Golden paints and I have to admit, I prefer the Goldens. I just need to get rid of all this other garbage paint and get the right Golden colors. I plan to airbrush these as well.

When I went to the art shop here in manchester where Live, I saw plenty of golden paints but these was for the artists, what I had to order was the (Golden Matt acrylics), I know this might sound confusing, but if I did,nt insisted on them I would,nt have got them.

From what I understand the fluids are the only ones you can airbrush. The heavy bodies need a matteing agent gonna try the matte acrylics though

If you order Golden Matte Acrylics on the web from Italian Art Store and want more than the 4 oz or 16 oz jars, simply write that you want the "Quart Size" in the comments box (as George mentioned, they don't carry the "gallon" size).

I deleted the last missal.Strictly Golden MATTE in jars-Very heavy bodied paint--For bills, i use some gloss--mars black, yellow ochre, cad orange, payne's grey.
Problem with airbrushing on decoys is rather simple--If you break the bond between the pigment and media, the pigment will have adhering problems--It may be fine for a deco, but not, in my opinion, for a hunting deke--Thin paint wil abrade way too fast.
As i said, i buy direct, and can get gallons of some colors, but most of what i use comes in quarts! Smile
Quit painting with the greasy kid stuff when i did my MFA thesis, back in 1967, and have not returned. Exclamation
