Farewell to a true friend
Today, our family Lab Jake was put to sleep after a happy life of 15 years. He was battling with tumors and struggling to walk and my Dad felt it was best to let him rest.
Jake was our one and only family pet growing up. We got him in Easton Maryland in 1997 and drove all the way home with him in our laps. As a puppy, he was full of spunk but he was an incredibly well behaved dog. He was retrieving ducks in 1998! I was 15 years old when we brought him into our family home and he was the center of attention among my brother, sister and I. Its crazy to think that he's been "our" dog for half of my life. He was a really special dog and its hard to say goodbye to such a good friend.
Dogs are amazing animals. They have a love and devotion to their family that is unmatched. They may not be able to use words, but they speak to our hearts. They never hold grudges and they quickly forget all of the times that you were annoyed with them and love you just the same a few minutes later. The hardest part of having a dog is letting them go.
Rest in Peace buddy.

Poem For Jake&Dave...
Aww man...sorry to hear about your loss...godbless Jake...i'm sure he's up stairs chasing a few of my'in around and playing tug a war......Here's something,i thought would be nice...Rusty
My old bird dog
It's the first day of season,
He knows it for many reasons.
Up before first light,
He always begins to excite,
looking for clues,
he carefully studies what I do.
Is this a false alarm? He watches my pick,
YES! It's the thunder stick!
Another year gone by,
he anxiously begins to cry.
A new year and the first day,
many birds to find, we pray.
I see his face so well,
as headlights reflect a guard rail.
In the truck while its dark,
I glance at his face, so gray mark'd.
His eyes wide,
fill'd with pride,
my old huntin' buddy by my side.
Ridin' with his master,
'can we get there any faster?'
Down the road we go,
memories, they begin to flow.
Cherishing hunts of the past,
thoughts of great times, forever last.
My buddy is old and his days are few,
my eyes water as I don't know what to do,
without my buddy, so loyal and true.
Though his body tires easily from years,
we will hunt with joy and shed no tears.
We hunt as one,
'til life says, 'you're done'!
I'd like to think that the man upstairs,
has a bird huntin' place, the answer to our prayers...
There we hunt in perfect autumn weather,
so many birds, still together.
Author, Dave Jones, inspired by a seasons first hunt and my old dog 'Chief'.

Re: Farewell to a true friend
Thanks guys. When you get a puppy you know the day will come, but it still doesn't make it easy. Jake was a great dog. Even when he could barely walk he still got excited when you came through the door. Can't even get my wife to do that.
