Anyone running 15 4 stroke on there boats? I currently have a 1988 15 envinrude and am looking to go newer and possible 4 stroke. I have been looking at the Suzuki. The 15 pushes the boat great and I prefer to stay in the hp range. Any thoughts? Thanks

Buck, I run a 2011 15 4-stroke Mercury, my brother runs a 2001 4 stroke 15 Mercury and my Dad runs a 15 4-stroke Honda. We all have sneakboxes. My brothers is the smallest in size and his runs real nice with the 4 stroke. You may have to take a look at your transom and make sure that it will be ok with a 4 stroke. The Honda 4's are lighter than the Mercury, but I prefer the Mercury. The 4's also run at lower RPM's than the 2's, and so you'll lose a touch of power going to a 4 stroke in the same size, BUT, not having to mix oil, the clean exhaust and the quiet of the 4 stroke makes them well worthwhile. Another thing too is that the 4 strokes take longer to warm up on those cold days. They need to get nice and warm before they'll let you feed the juice. This hasn't been an issue for me though, I'm fine with letting it warm up for about 5-10mins on those cold mornings.

You may also have to modify your motor board as well, as some of the 4's seem to have a shorter shaft, so you may need to get it lower on the transom. Hope that helps! And welcome to the site by the way. Be sure to post up an intro in the Lodge!

i went from a 84 15 johnson to a 2001 honda 15 4 stroke on my higbee. i beleive i picked up some power. Starts right up in the cold and can get running pretty quick. my brother now runs my old motor on his higbee and he cant catch me with my honda. the only thing that sucks is shooting over the bigger motor. i also notice when reaching back to mess with the motor the back of the boat goes under alittle but i can deal with that. i also went with electric start this time, so much nicer.

As Davey said I bought a 01 4 stroke 15 merc this year and love it.. Not having to deal with the oil gas mixture anymore is nice, starting on them cold days isn't bad like davey said just let her idle for a few more minutes no biggy, i'm running about 25-28mph wide open so the powers definitely there. It is a big weight difference from the 2 stroke but the boat will handle it well. Some adjusting might be needed to the motorboard but you should be fine.

I would try to stick with a 2 storke you can still find good ones out there. I found a awesome almost no hour 1996Evinrude 15hp. I got lucky and pretty much stole the motor from the guy but he was happy and so was I. Its getting harder to find the 2 strokes check out ebay and also smalloutboards.com they always have good used 9.9 and 15hp but Jim D. has a real nice for sale in the classifieds

I went from a 15hp 2 stroke OMC to a 8hp 4 stroke yammi. The OMC was pretty beat so I doubt it was still producing full hp. But I didnt notice a huge lose in power. Still gets right on plain w/ me at 180# my 100# lab and gear. I havent had the GSP out yet for a real speed. The only reason I went w/ the 8hp was because I found it on craigs list for a decent price. I did hace to add to the transom /motorboard to raise the yammi a bit. Used 5/4 ipee. Could have gone a little more but that's what I had on hand.

Here it is after the swap in the water.

So far so good. I really didn't get to use it much this year, maybe 6-8 times. But I'm really happy with it. Starts 1-2 pulls every time. even on the few kinda colds mornings we had. Good luck with whatever you end up with. Luke

I think it looks better that way. I thought my brother was going to have a heart attack when he stopped by and I had pulled all the stickers off and was sanding it.

I bought the motor just for my duck boat and I'm planning on keeping it for a while. I figured why put a shinny motor on the back of a flat green, grassed boat. Especially when I pay plenty of money to have everything else camo.

Did it. Installed a 15 hp 4 stroke. No real change, the boat handled it fine. Now it's time for grass rails and a new paint job.
