Black duck colors

Post  Scott Salzer on Sun Aug 26, 2012 3:53 pm

I am having trouble mixing the correct colors for the head and the outline of the feathers. For the head I tried using white, titan buff, burnt umber and raw sienna - this looks too light to me. For the feathers I tried burnt sienna and black and didn't like that either. Can someone please help me out?

Raw Sienna + Burnt Umber + titanium white. Adjust mixture for feather outlines by using less BU and white.

I tried the color you recommended for the feather edging Davey. I like it. Thanks again.

No problem Scott. Colors are very subjective between individuals. Getting the right base colors for the mixture is key, from there you can tweak as you see fit. On black ducks you want any feather you do on the body to be subtle, otherwise it could look to similar to a hen mallard. Try thinning the paint down well and use a thin script liner brush. Afterwards a wash with your nase color (Burnt umber/Ultramarine blue) with furher help to tone down the feathering. Be sure to share some pics of your work. Haven't seen anything since your first two!

I'll have to post some pics of these 2 when I finish them. I know I haven't in a while.

A pair of hollow cork, pine bottom board, red cedar tail board and white cedar head painted in acrylics Black Ducks. My first feeble attempt at this species. Feel free to comment on what I need to improve upon ( I know there's a lot!) I'll go first...my feather layout sucks.

Thanks Dave. Can you offer any advice on laying the feathers in? Or is it just a matter of practice, practice, practice?
