Wire and Canvas Goose
Not exactly mainstream in decoy carving but wire and canvas decoys intrigued me so I started one. Unfortunately I had to put it on hold for awhile due to illness and shop temps in excess of 110.
Anyway its getting cooler and I'm on the mend so hopefully I'll have this lessor goose done soon.

Re: Wire and Canvas Goose
Rick,
I will be glad to see it when it is completed. I have never seen one used in the field. I can definately appreciate "alternative" decoys as you may have noticed in my "y-board" posting. Send more pics when you get it a little further along.

This is a first for me and while I'm pretty confident that I can do the wire and canvas portion carving the head and painting is what concerns me.
So far I must have looked at and downloaded maybe 30 pics of geese. The one that I really want is being hard to locate. An overhead pic of the back and tail.
I'm hoping to be able to spend a lot of time on it during my weekend. I'll post pics if I progress any.

Re: Wire and Canvas Goose
After a long bout with upper respiratory problems I was able to get into the shop, clean out a space for a new work bench, added a fluorescent light to that, and cleared an area next to it for a work bench I’ll make this week. Made some repairs to the bandsaw and got it going again, and rigged up a stand for decoy work.
This was a camera mount I used in Iraq. Had 3 suction cups I’d mount a camcorder and mount it to either the front windshield, or back glass depending on where our vehicle fell in line. I had it lying around for awhile and kept meaning to put it on EBay. Glad I kept forgetting about the thing.
After getting the mount fixed up, and after a trip to Hobby Lobby with the wife, I started back on my decoy. I wasn’t happy with the neck and shoulders so I removed them and did them over. The neck is screwed down but the shoulders are balsa and just gorilla glued to the base and neck. The tie wraps will be removed once the gorilla glue dries on the shoulders and I'll finish sanding to form.
Never have carved anything and my first attempt at a head was a wash. The bill was cut too short, so I had to do that over. The carved head on the table is actually one I got from AutumnWings.com. It was too large for this lesser. I believe I can salvage the first one for maybe a teal later.
Going to try adding the cord to the wire this evening.

Re: Wire and Canvas Goose
Got the cord tied in last night and was ready to be sanded in this morning. After getting the breast sanded down it’ll be ready for the canvas, which should be interesting this first time around.
From what I’ve read the heads are usually glued on and/or a dowel rod used. I decided to go a different route. I’m using a hanger bolt and a threaded wood insert. The hanger will go into the head and the insert into the neck. Probably overkill but I want to know that the head won’t come off if picked up on a freezing morning.

Re: Wire and Canvas Goose
Well I haven't gotten as far as I'd hoped. The confidence that I wouldnt have much trouble with the canvas was ....uhm...wrong. I must have put it on and taken it off 8 times. To the point I was about to throw the whole thing in our burn pile. But since theres a burn ban in effect there would have been little satisfaction there LOL.
So instead I grabbed the head blank that was ready for carving, my Kbar Warthog pocket knife, a rasp and some sandpaper and work my frustration out and think what I could do about the canvas. This what a few hours got me. Not bad for my first carving, but far from competition level.
While carving on it I came up with what I hoped was going to be the solution. I went back and read some suggestions Heck Rice had made to another carver. Heck Rice is a master carver when it comes to these decoys. I saw a miniature swan he did the other day. Amazing! It's all of maybe 2" long! I changed out the backbone, sealed it and replaced the wires. I did get the canvas on, it's still not exactly where I want it but it's much closer and will work for the gunner it's built to be. No pic yet with the canvas as there wasn't enough good light for a cell pic.
Hope to have more done in a few days.

calling this one done
I'm calling this one done for the most part. I'm not real happy with the paint on the side and will mess with it when I have more time. Other than that I just need to install a keel. Then it's on to the next ones.

Re: Wire and Canvas Goose
Thanks Davey, I'm enjoying making these. I just need to learn more on painting, especially on how to stop. I had the sides closer to what I wanted but just kept dabbing paint on the thing.Davey Welsh wrote:You did a damn fine job Rick!
