Just great lets bash fellow duck hunters on a waterfowl internet website. If they were unlicensed , trespassing or engaged in reckless behavior I'm all in. The totality of the curcumstances as I see is none of the aforemnentioned. These guys were bad shots no doubt were not sky busting and chose to pursue divers . They are tough on the palate but its there choice. Im a died in wool duck hunter and have many a hunt ruined by this action, but i think instead of alienating fellow waterfowlers we should focus on the real issues as I see them. In todays world as I see it with the anti gun and anti hunting factions prevealing I think we should all stick together. If i was to blow off steam I would address loss of habit, new homeowners in coastal areas, trying to expand firearms discharge areas, and all but due away with the areas rich waterfowl heritage. Divide and conquer is the oldest war game strategy. Lets stick together , just saying!!!!!!!!

I would think that this is the best location for hashing out this sort of issue and not in the local Gazette or on a Web Blog. I am not trying to alienate other hunters but if other hunters, especially younger hunters, follow the example set by the ones that ran into the other day, then they will think that is the standard. Anti-gun and Anti-hunter groups will always find the fodder they need to keep on chipping away at tradition and heritage. It is up to experienced waterfowlers to talk about issues such as these which are not handled by the law. This is an issue that goes to the core of the hunter and the respect they have for their quarry. In VA, we can take 6 ducks/day. These guys shot +-150 times. Assuming that they hit a bird once in every three shots that equates to 50 crippled or dead birds. Assuming that they had the max person/boat (3 people/boat for this private location) this would mean that they could shoot 18 buffleheads. Do the math. If they had been hunting next to an expensive subdivision, luckily they weren't, they may have had the police called on them, this sort of PR is not needed for waterfowling. They broke no laws in what they did as long as they made every attempt at collecting the cripples. At some point though they should have counted the cripples out of their personal limits and stopped hunting. Then perhaps go to the range and learn how to shoot. At a minimum, they "educated" a whole lot of ducks and made it harder for other hunters. If they had any younger hunters in their boat, they educated them in what I would consider an immoral practice and shows a distinct lack of respect. Our younger hunters have a hard enough time learning how to hunt and do it right, we have to hold all of us up to a higher standard. I enjoy waterfowling not only for the meat but for the tradition and the idea that it is a gentlemans sport. As for alienating some waterfowlers, waterfowlers like these I have no problem running-off, we should speak up when we see something like this happening.

Well said Rus. To many hunters out there are now sitting not the best examples for the newer generation of hunters. Also its easier to vent here than get in a heated discussion at a boat ramp where someone could get hurt. Also John I think you'll find that the waterfowler is a group that stick more closer together than most other hunting groups.

Well said, as stated by Russ he has no problem running waterfowlers off, is thats what this site is a about ?. Reminds me of other sites, were fellow waterfowlers were bashed on a regular basis. Russ spokes only on assumption and presented no facts, were there cripples unknown were there other hunters, were there even 150 shots. These guys are not known to me , but woke up in the early morning did not encroch on his postion spent money and license, gas, food possible lodging. Who are we to tell them what to hunt how many shots to fire. Were the over the limit no evidence of. Do they need better mentors and better role models.
Im young but can tell you I saw the hay day of 10 broads, plus puddlers limits , then your divers. I bought ammo by the case, had my face blackned with gun shot residue and plucked birds into the am hour. If Russ was next to us surely he would be blowing off steam. My fellow hunting partners/ mentors are some of the most esteamed carvers and waterfowlers going and hold officer postion on many a waterfowler comitee . This rant was about one hunter passing judgement on fellow hunters and the hunting style because it did not conform to his style. Whats next a survey upon membership to delta or DU, asking how many rounds u shout at what species, and if i does not conform we deny you membership. New guys need to be embraced not , " Run Off".

As far us heated discussions and possible waterfowerls being assaulted and bodily injury inflicited upon them ,as other posted stated at lauuch sites. I can tell you I'm from Jersey and were a tumultous bunch, the only heated discussions I can recall at the ramp is hows buying the first round.

John,

No matter what company you keep in the blind or sit next to at the local DU or Delta Banquet table, how we conduct ourselves in the field is a direct reflection of how we handle ourselves in other arenas. Shooting to our limits as determined by our respective States is fine but indulging as these hunters did is downright greedy. You are right that I have no proof as to how many cripples there were or shots fired. I am sure those guys would frown at me for trying to videotape their hunt and that would be petty. I started hunting in the era of small limits (mid 90's) and a good day's bag to me is one quality duck. That said, I tend to really appreciate any duck that I see. Most of the other waterfowlers I know and hunt with are happy with a dabbler or a canvasback or a scaup and I live close to Back Bay in VA. I will also say that I have never taken a whole limit (and not for lack of trying) but when I go home at the end of the day with A bird in the bag I can say to myself that I did it right. All I can say at this point is that some people we encounter in the marsh are waterfowlers and some are just out shooting ducks. If I run off someone that are just out shooting ducks then fine, I won't lose sleep over it, I would not have had to say anything to a waterfowler. If we don't police ourselves then the conservation officers will. I hope it doesn't come to that point. I am glad though that someone thought enough of the topic and my thoughts to comment on it. Hope you have a good season try not to shoot all of the birds migrating through NJ so they might reach me in VA.

John, I don't think Russ was trying to run other hunters off. He was just venting about what happened. I've had many occasions where I've witnessed guys sky blasting at ducks 100yds in the air. Just the other day I watched 3 guys set their decoy rig on the opposite side of the bank (50yds) and proceed to blast at any duck within a mile radius. All they did was educate birds and pretty much ruin the spot for everyone else.

Nobody is saying that people don't have the right to hunt the way they want, but we owe it to ourselves to help stop these unethical actions by a few. The Duck Lodge is not like other forums. We won't tolerate attacks on other forum members. I don't find Russ's post to be of that nature. He was mearly venting some steam on how an unknown group of guys thought WWIII broke out and the buffleheads were the enemy. Lol

Dave the post is titled blow off steam , against who, who is fellow waterfowlers. The poster is quoted ,"Waterfowelrs like these I have no problem running off". The post is not subjective, it is in black bold print. I just dont drink the Kool Aid. I'm done posting said my peace, I'm shocked no other fellow waterfowlers on the site shared my mindset. I guess if we run everyone off we can have the marshes all to ourselves, maybe im the fool.
