Duck and Carving Terminology Empty Duck and Carving Terminology

I am fairly new to duck decoy carving. Have only completed 3 decoys with 1 in work and 1 in need of repainting (not satisfactory). I am not a duck hunter.
What is the difference between "working decoy" and "gunner"? Or, is this just two terms that basically refer to the same thing - a decoy used on the water?
thank.

Hey Bob, welcome to the forum. Gunners and working decoys are one in the same, just different terminology. A working decoy or "gunner" is built to be durable and fool weary waterfowl. Paint schemes can be simple, complex or a little of both. A gunning block should be made to self right and ride the water conditions realistically.

perhaps "stool" sample will cover all bases!

Simply put, hunting tools, made for use when gathering fowl, not for attracting judges or collectors.
If the only water that bird ever sees again is when the roof leaks on the coffee table, it AIN"T a decoy! Very Happy Wink
