Gadwall decoys
I'm seeing more Gadwalls in places where I normally gun. I don't have any Gadwall decoys because I've never needed them, but I'd like to add just half dozen to the spread to entice any Gaddy's that may wheel by.
Who makes Gadwall decoys that actually LOOK like a Gadwall? Those Avery GHG Gadwall decoys are hideous looking. I think I'm going to try carving my own this year, but I have a lot on the bench for this off-season.

Re: Gadwall decoys
That GHG hen looks okay, but the drake is ridiculously dark.
I'm lucky enough to have a father who grew up hunting gadwall infested areas of NJ and have a rig that I pull down every once in a while when I see them around. I did shoot gadwalls over them this season.

They are corks done by the late Ken Lions. We don't use them too much, but they work.

There are two top carvers on this forum that could make those decoys for you, George W and Jode Hillman perhaps they could chime in mate.

I'm gonna try carving a rig myself, but I may just buy some ghg for the time being. The tanglefree gadwalls don't look too bad.

Re: Gadwall decoys
I saw a picture of the GHG in actual usage and the drakes didn't look as bad as the advertisement.
We actually got two gaddies this afternoon, decoyed nicely into the black duck blocks.

Davey,
I hunt over 14 balsas and corks mixed--separated from the rest of the stuff--Years ago, we swore the damn things could count!!
The paint is the fun part of those elegant buggers.
I may have some shots on the wegsite, but they are old--have reversed the back and side paint to black, with combing, and whitish dragged onto the vermiculation--Like it better than the old ones i was messing with.
We found that over on this side of the bay, they DO NOT take to spinners, nor do they like aggressive calling.
Glad to hear that you guys are finally picking up some new arrivals--Hope to hit the place steady from here on in, until the end.
