2002 Estuary rebuild DONE!!!!
This Estuary was one that I donated to Ducks Unlimited. It had never been used and sat in a open barn which did major dammage to the deck over 10 years ine the weather. I got the boat in Dec. from a guy in NH who got it from Craigs list. This is how I got it with the deck off.
Here is some of the work being done.

Great thread, can't wait to see how this progresses. I was thinking about replacing the deck on my Estuary too...these pics help!
Question - what are the rub rails screwed to? Can you remove the deck without removing the rub rails?

Re: 2002 Estuary rebuild DONE!!!!
Davey, As you can see in this pic the guy left the rub rails on and this deck was the same as yours, T&G VG fir. On your boat you should be able to see the rub rail screw holes. ( newer boats they are filled) You need to have the rub rails off in order to install the new deck and use a router to trim around the whole boat and the cockpit openings. You will need to make new rub rails, I got one side off but the other broke. They are Oak on the older boats and I use Mahogany now.

O the rub rails are screwed in to the shear clamp.

Looks like a solid boat. Its always interesting to see"inside" how some boats have the skeleton in place.

Wow, 5 pieces huh? Is there a particular reason you do that or is the deck just too big for 1 or 2 pieces? I'm going to let my deck go another year, but at some point I have to pull it up and replace it. I love my Estuary though and I'm saving these pics you posted for when I get to doing my deck, that way I can see what I'm getting into.
Also Dave, for the rub rails, what size/material wood do you recommend for those? And how do you get them to curve along the hull?

Re: 2002 Estuary rebuild DONE!!!!
Davey, There is no reason for you to have to pull that deck off and replace it. My 40'er has the same wood and its 73 years old.
It took me more than 2 times longer to REBUILD this boat than to make a new one, and the coast is the same. You are better off buying a new hull from me and buiding from there. I can build a boat in 40hrs and then another 40hrs for the rigging. The only reason I put the new deck on is that the other guy took the old one off and could not figgure out how to put the new one on. He also got a price from me and as well as from some other guy. I would only do it at $80. per hr + materials and it came to the coast of a new boat.
Here is the new cockpit coamming and old ore locks and the coamming for the dodger.

Re: 2002 Estuary rebuild DONE!!!!
Thanks John, I know Jimmy's going to be made becouse I put pockits up front in side the dodger for gear.
My son is going to paint the dodger this weekend for you and the trailer is all set with your plate on it. I will paint the deck next week as soon as I get the 12'er out of the shop.

Well here she is all done, I would like to thank Jim D. and John C. for giving me the oppertunity to rebuild a boat that was left for ruin. I love when it all comes together and there is another Estuary out there like this.
